The name AGATE came originally from the Achates River (now the Drillo River) in Sicily.  Once plentiful, good quality  BLUE LACE AGATE is becoming increasingly difficult to obtain and therefore has become extremely expensive.

BLUE LACE AGATE is made up of multipal bands, or laminations, of blues and white chalcedony, (micro-crystalline quartz, ) in thin irregular layers. A famous deposit of BLUE LACE AGATE occurs in Southern Namibia, in veins associated with Dolerite.
